The technology around RDP & RemoteFX is rapidly improving, which is leading to an enhanced computing experience for the end user. RemoteFX is a display protocol that enhances Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). With RemoteFX, various kinds of native desktop content can be viewed in near full fidelity on a virtual desktop. RemoteFX technologies have advanced coding and graphics virtualization, therefore it delivers a higher quality user experience compared to RDP on its alone.
A virtual desktop enables the end user to work remotely in a Windows environment, run 3D applications and watch videos. Thanks to RemoteFX, virtual desktop performance is close to that of native desktop. The latest developments on RemoteFX are available in Windows 8 and Windows server 2012. These operating systems support all RemoteFX features, including the ability to connect to RemoteApp, support for WAN networks and the redirecting of USB devices using RemoteFX USB redirection. Likewise, remote desktop application has become a whole lot better with the introduction of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. This can be attributed to that fact that RDP now uses many more RemoteFX technologies, which make for a remote desktop experience that’s feature rich, faster and much slicker. For example, now a user can stream a 720p video without the remote desktop skipping the slightest bit.
In Windows Server 2012, Microsoft ironed out virtualization implementation problems to improve Remote Desktop services and RemoteFX. The latest in RDP technology eases virtual desktop management and features high availability options, while new RemoteFX technology improves graphics rendering and remote desktop access over WAN, however it’s important to note that the latter requires additional hardware.
In Windows 8, the latest in RemoteFX includes multi-touch, which enables users to access Remote Desktop Sessions (RDS) from a touch enabled device. Another important feature is Adaptive Graphics, which changes the way RDS renders visuals. All the rendering is done on the host, instead of rendering on the client side. Windows 8 RemoteFX improves virtual desktop performance over WAN, as it detects connection speeds automatically. In Windows Server 2008 R2, RemoteFX could be used to deliver remote desktop via VDI, but this needed a separate graphics processing unit (GPU) for encoding. In Windows Server 2008 R2, RemoteFX does not need a GPU because it uses software encoding.
