"It's such a relief not having to worry about compatibility issues anymore. Whether it's Windows or Mac, I'm ready to tackle any task thrown my way. If someone mentions Windows applications, no sweat! I can handle it all on my MacBook, thanks to Parallels Desktop."
During the COVID pandemic, Cyndi found herself considering new horizons as she transitioned into the world of contract work. This transition meant furthering her education, which led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Digital Economy.
The challenge — Tackling Windows application access on M1 MacBook
Cyndi faced a hurdle, particularly in a course focused on RPA (Robotic Process Automation), where Windows was required to access applications like UiPath, Microsoft Automate, and Power Automate.
However, there was a problem. The new M1 chip on her MacBook Air didn’t support Boot Camp. Plus, Boot Camp requires rebooting each time you switch from one OS to another, which was a timewaster.
She sought advice from a friend deep in the Apple world. "Just use Parallels Desktop!" her friend suggested.
Cyndi watched a demo showcasing Parallels Desktop. Its intuitive interface and seamless integration between Mac and Windows piqued her curiosity. The hassle-free experience was exactly what she was looking for, so she moved forward with a trial to see the benefits firsthand.
"It wasn’t efficient to haul around a second MacBook with Boot Camp installed just to use Windows apps. Parallels was a way for me to access the required Windows software on my M1 machine.”
The solution — Unified access to Windows and macOS environments with Parallels Desktop
Cyndi uses Parallels Desktop at least once a month, primarily during Gen AI training sessions for educators.
During these sessions, Cyndi trains educators on using Gen AI in the classroom. She uses her Mac for the training sessions; however, many schools use PCs, so she demonstrates activities in both macOS and Windows.
For example, one activity involves creating an outline with Gen AI responses in Microsoft Word and converting that outline to a PowerPoint. Cyndi also demonstrates how various processes are different on Mac versus on Windows.
Cyndi mainly utilizes web browsers such as Chrome and Microsoft Edge within her Parallels Desktop virtual environment. However, she also leverages specific Windows applications, like UiPath, for her RPA exploration.
Dropbox integration from both OSs is also important since that is where Cyndi stores all her files. Whether she’s using a Windows VM or Mac, accessing her Dropbox files is effortless.
Coherence Mode is another key feature that she uses; it makes Windows invisible while still making its applications available in macOS (if you prefer, you can also set Windows to full screen in Coherence mode).
“Switching between operating systems is effortless with Coherence Mode. I’m more productive, and it really improves collaboration with clients. When I work in full-screen mode, it feels like I'm using Windows directly, which eliminates compatibility worries. Clients love the smooth transition, keeping our workflow running smoothly without any hiccups”, explains Cyndi.
She’s experienced a significant shift in her workflow dynamics since adopting Parallels Desktop. The ability to seamlessly access Windows applications has streamlined her processes, particularly in scenarios where specific software, such as Class Point for presentations, is exclusively compatible with Windows.
“Parallels Desktop has made juggling multiple devices a thing of the past and has really simplified my workflow. Plus, the way it seamlessly integrates macOS and Windows makes my day-to-day so much easier.”
The results — Cost-effective student licensing and efficient OS switching with reduced hardware demands
Parallels Desktop offers Cyndi not only efficiency, but also real cost savings. Her experience highlights the software's ability to deliver concrete benefits, ranging from cost-effectiveness to time savings and efficiency, along with a more streamlined workflow.
- Cost-effectiveness: Using a three-year student pass has been incredibly beneficial. It allows Cyndi to access essential software at discounted student rates, including international certifications.
- Time efficiency: Cyndi no longer needs to deal with frequent system restarts. Switching between macOS and Windows is quick and seamless.
- Minimal hardware impact: Heavy requirements for Cyndi’s computer are eliminated, delivering optimal performance without slowing down her system.
“Parallels Desktop has become essential for me. It's not just about using devices; it's about maximizing productivity. This software has truly made a difference in how I work.”
