As a dedicated Mac user since 2007, Thomas initially adopted the reliability of Apple's ecosystem. However, his journey encountered a hiccup when high-performance Windows software, such as Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project, became a necessity in his work. Both apps were available on a browser but not on a Mac with their full feature set.

The challenge — Running resource-intensive Windows applications on Mac

Determined to bridge the gap between his Mac allegiance and the Windows reality, his challenge was two-fold.

As an IT architect specializing in end-user computing, Thomas needed access to a variety of high-performance Windows applications. Moreover, his commitment to the Mac ecosystem meant finding a solution that seamlessly merged the power of Windows with the intuitive Mac interface he preferred.

"When I switched from a Windows PC to a Mac in 2007, the decisive reason was Windows Vista", reflects Thomas. "At that time, I had bought a relatively expensive Sony notebook because the one I had at that time was too 'weak' for Vista. And that's where the problems started. No, or poorly ported drivers from XP, led to one "blue screen" after another. Frustrated as I was, I passed by a Gravis store and looked at a MacBook. I came home with a MacBook and Mac OS X 10.5 and have stayed with Apple to this day. I have never regretted that."

The solution — Coherence Mode and more in Parallels Desktop Business Edition

"I work professionally in the field of end-user computing – and that's a Windows world," explained Thomas. "Since a lot of it takes place in the data center and most of it runs on a Windows Server, I can't get past many applications. Starting with simple things like PowerShell for automating, configuring, and managing systems, to the classic MS Office applications, and the self-developed applications for my customers."

Thomas began searching for a solution that would allow him to leverage the best of both worlds. That path led him to Parallels Desktop, a virtualization software known for seamlessly integrating Windows applications into the macOS environment.

Intrigued by its potential, Thomas evaluated the integration of Windows applications with his Mac – more specifically, Coherence Mode, flexible USB redirection, and security features like Single Sign-On (SSO).

Thomas previously worked with VMWare Fusion and vBox as well, “however, neither came close to the features or speed of Parallels Desktop. In addition to the limited support I get with the other products, the investment in Parallels Desktop is worth it.”

From testing Windows applications or packaging them for automatic software distribution, Parallels Desktop proved the ideal solution because “I can control Parallels Desktop and the corresponding virtual machines directly from the Visual Studio development environment on my Mac. A second major area is the development of PowerShell scripts. Although I also use PowerShell on the Mac, not all modules and functions are available to me there. I then do something like this in a virtual machine with the corresponding Windows.”

Integration with HashiCorp Vagrant is also a big plus for Thomas. Given he works on projects that require virtualization and testing across different environments, this integration streamlines his development workflow and facilitates cross-platform testing.

In addition, Thomas utilizes the sandbox function to separate the virtual machine from his Mac. He doesn't have to worry about anything transferring from one side to the other.

The result — Everyday efficiency with the seamless integration of Windows and Mac environments

The following capabilities have also further enhanced Thomas’ daily tasks:

  • SSO and security integration: Seamlessly integrates with Single Sign-On (SSO) systems, streamlining authentication processes and strengthening security measures, ensuring enhanced access control over virtualized environments.
  • Compliance: Enables Thomas to adhere to industry standards and regulations by providing tools for managing virtualized environments in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Mass deployment: Facilitates the deployment of virtualized environments across large development teams, improving efficiency and consistency in development workflows.
  • Premium support: Thomas can access dedicated support services to resolve technical issues promptly, minimizing downtime and ensuring smooth development operations.

"For me, Parallels Desktop integrates perfectly with macOS and is not only responsible for the virtualization of Windows," shares Krampe. "I created 10 to 15 virtual machines on an external SSD – starting with various Linux systems to Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi Debian to various Windows servers."

Armed with the ability to integrate Windows applications into his Mac environment, Thomas navigates seamlessly between platforms, leveraging the best tools for the job with little effort, whether testing applications, developing PowerShell scripts, or operating customer-specific Windows applications.

“Parallels Desktop isn't just a tool; it's the epitome of seamless integration in today's IT landscape. Running Windows apps on Mac feels like second nature. It's like having the best of both worlds at your fingertips, effortlessly improving productivity while minimizing any hassles. That's why, without a doubt, Parallels Desktop stands as the gold standard for anyone looking to streamline their workflow and maximize efficiency."
